For the past 29 years the community of Belleville, IL has come together to support Charity. The town of Belleville has been hosting the Chili Cook Off since 1983. It started with just a few vendors celebrating their love for chili and has grown to over 70 vendors that serve not only chili of all kinds, but also the usual “fair food” you will find at these sort of events, also there are several beer tents located throughout the Chili Cook Off. The event is hosted each year by the Belleville Chamber of Commerce and sponsored by various local businesses.
The Chili Cook Off attracts over 60,000 people annually. Those who attend can sample some of the best chili in the area and watch the 3 local judges determine who has the best chili in the area. There is a non profit winner and a private/commercial vendor winner and a first, second and third place ribbon is awarded. Festival attendees can register at each vendor booth for their favorite chili
Most of the vendors are non profit charities but some businesses donate 100% of their proceeds to their charity of choice. By now I am sure you are intrigued and would like to know more about this wondrous event.
OK here is how it works. The vendors that have made chili sell sample cups of their chili. The prices range from $.25 to $1.00 per sample cup. All the money raised by the vendors selling Chili and their other wares, is either donated to Charity if raised by a business or kept by the charity. If you find a chili, charity or specific vendor that you think is better than all the rest you can “vote” for them by adding money to their “People's Choice” jar. The vendor that has the most money in their jar wins the peoples choice award. All the money collected in the Peoples Choice jars is donated to a local food bank.
is a family friendly event and you see people of all ages enjoying
the festival like atmosphere and beauty of the Belleville Square.
Check out the kids pavilion for face painting, rock climbing and
other kid friendly activities. There also is a stage area where live
music will be playing throughout the event.
What does this have to do with Trucker Charity? Well this year Trucker Charity Inc has purchased booth space at the Chili Cook Off. This will help us get the word out about the Charity in a community where trucking is an integral part of daily life and raise some MUCH needed funds. Vice President Ben Pernell ( Chiliman) and his wife Arlene will be cooking our chili that we plan to enter into the competition. Secretary Kerry Mullins as usual has been frantic organizing everything down to the last bean and the President Lance Wood.... Well he has been working on a super secret dish that is going to drive the public wild. Those who show us a current CDL or active duty military in uniform will eat for FREE!!!!! This year Trucker Charity has an extensive menu.
